On Friday, a Pune court ordered the detention of a 37-year-old man, Dattatray Ramdas Gade, accused of raping a woman inside an empty state transport bus at the Swargate depot. He has been remanded to police custody until March 12. Authorities arrested Gade after an extensive search operation utilized drones and sniffer dogs, leading to his capture in a nearby paddy field.
The police presented Gade to the Pune Sessions Court under tight security. They requested a 14-day custody to facilitate their investigation, stating that Gade had approached the 26-year-old victim at the bus terminus, lured her into an unoccupied bus, and committed the crime. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Gade at the scene during the incident.
Gade has a history of criminal activity, being implicated in multiple cases involving female complainants. Meanwhile, his defense attorney, Wajid Khan, argued that the case has turned into a media spectacle, asserting that the interaction between Gade and the victim was consensual. The court ultimately decided to maintain Gade’s custody for further investigation.
