Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of riverine dolphins in India, with 2,397 individuals, followed by Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam. This data comes from India’s first comprehensive riverine dolphin survey, covering 28 rivers and conducted over 8,500 kilometers.

Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) has been reported to house the largest population of riverine dolphins in India, totaling 2,397 individuals. This information comes from the inaugural comprehensive riverine dolphin report, which was officially released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 7th meeting of the National Board for Wildlife held at Gir, Gujarat.

Following U.P. are Bihar with 2,220 dolphins, West Bengal with 815, and Assam with 635 dolphins. These figures were compiled as part of a nationwide survey that assessed riverine dolphin populations across eight states.

The dolphin estimation process required significant effort, involving the survey of 28 rivers, 3,150 man-days of labor, and the coverage of over 8,500 kilometers of waterways. Notably, the U.P. government designated the Ganga dolphin as the state aquatic animal on October 17, 2023.

Dolphins are found in several rivers, including the Ganga, Yamuna, Chambal, Ghaghra, Rapti, and Gerua. This assessment not only highlights the population distribution but also emphasizes the importance of these species within their river ecosystems.

Uttar Pradesh leads India in riverine dolphin population, boasting 2,397 dolphins, followed by Bihar and West Bengal. The national dolphin survey, the first of its kind, highlights the biodiversity in India’s waterways and underlines the significance of conservation efforts. Measures like the designation of the Ganga dolphin as the state aquatic animal further support these initiatives.
