American pastor Josh Sullivan, originally from Tennessee, was kidnapped by armed men in South Africa and later rescued during a police operation. He was abducted last Thursday while delivering a sermon in Eastern Cape province, where the assailants also stole mobile phones from church congregants. Sullivan was taken in his own pick-up truck, which was discovered abandoned shortly after the incident.

An intensive investigation was initiated, and by Tuesday night, authorities believed Sullivan was held in a house approximately a 20-minute drive from where he was kidnapped. A pivotal moment occurred when suspects in a car began firing at police officers, resulting in a shootout that led to the deaths of three unidentified suspects.

The police reported that Sullivan was discovered inside the vehicle used by the suspects during their attack. Lt Col Avele Fumba confirmed that Sullivan emerged from the incident “miraculously unharmed” and was assessed to be in “excellent condition” by medical personnel.

Since 2018, Sullivan had served at the Motherwell branch of the Fellowship Baptist Church. He has a wife and two children and has now reunited with his family. The rise in violent kidnappings is a growing concern in South Africa, where incidents have increased by 264% over the past decade.

Pastor Josh Sullivan’s dramatic rescue highlights the dangers of crime in South Africa, where kidnapping rates have significantly increased. Sullivan’s miraculous escape without injury serves as a beacon of hope amidst a concerning trend in violent crime against foreigners and locals alike. His reunion with family marks a fortunate conclusion to a harrowing ordeal.
