US Pastor Rescued from Kidnappers in South Africa After Police Gunfight

Josh Sullivan, a US pastor, was rescued in South Africa after being kidnapped during a sermon. Armed police engaged in a shootout with his abductors, resulting in three fatalities. Sullivan, unharmed, was reunited with his family post-rescue. Kidnapping rates have sharply increased in South Africa over the past decade.
An American pastor, Josh Sullivan, was rescued from kidnappers in South Africa following a police shootout. He had been abducted during a sermon in the Eastern Cape province last week and was held by armed men. On Tuesday, law enforcement engaged in a gunfight with the suspects, leading to the rescue of Sullivan.
Sullivan, originally from Tennessee, has been serving with the Fellowship Baptist Church in Motherwell since 2018 along with his family. He was seized by four armed men who broke into his church, stealing items before kidnapping him. His abandoned truck was discovered shortly after the abduction.
A multi-agency task force, including the Anti-Gang Unit and the Serious Organised Crime Unit, took over the investigation. When they located the suspected hideout in KwaMagxaki, a shootout erupted with suspects attempting to flee. Three of the suspects were killed during the clash.
Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba reported that Sullivan was found unharmed inside the vehicle used by the attackers. He received immediate medical assessment and was deemed to be in excellent health. Data indicates that kidnappings in South Africa have surged by 264% over the past ten years, with only a small fraction involving ransom.
After his release, Sullivan was reunited with his wife, Meagan, and their two children. Tom Hatley, a training pastor, shared news of Sullivan’s release on social media, thanking supporters for their prayers.
Josh Sullivan’s safe rescue highlights the dangers of kidnapping in South Africa, where such incidents have seen a significant increase. The cooperation of multiple law enforcement agencies was crucial in swiftly locating and rescuing Sullivan, underscoring the need for ongoing vigilance. Amidst rising kidnapping statistics, the community’s outpouring of support was essential in providing hope during a challenging time for his family.
