Severe Weather Alert: Rain, Storms, and Heat Waves Expected in North India

North India will experience rain, storms, and hail from April 18-20 due to an intense western disturbance. Heavy rainfall is particularly expected in Jammu and Kashmir, while Rajasthan and Gujarat face heat wave conditions until mid-April. Other regions will see scattered moderate rainfall and thunderstorms.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that North India will experience rain, storms, and hail due to a significant western disturbance affecting the Western Himalayan region from April 18 to April 20. Rainfall is expected to be particularly heavy over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during this period, while gusty winds may reach speeds of 40-50 km/h.
From April 18 to April 20, isolated heavy rainfall combined with thunderstorms and lightning is anticipated in the plains of northwest India. Additionally, Rajasthan is expected to endure ‘heat wave’ to ‘severe heat wave’ conditions until April 18, whereas Gujarat will experience similar heat conditions until April 17. Dust storms and thunderstorms are also likely in parts of West and East Rajasthan on April 17.
IMD Director General M Mohapatra noted that while heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted for Jammu and Kashmir, the northern plains will experience a drop in temperature, alleviating the heat wave conditions in Rajasthan and Gujarat by April 17. Heavy rain and snowfall will predominantly be limited to Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
The weather patterns are influenced by several meteorological systems, including an upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan, another over East Madhya Pradesh, and a third over East Assam. Additional troughs affecting the region may lead to scattered moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, particularly in northeast and east India over the next five days.
In summary, North India is set to face significant weather changes due to an approaching western disturbance, bringing rain and hail primarily to Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Though heat wave conditions will persist in Rajasthan and Gujarat until mid-April, they are expected to ease subsequently. Overall, these weather patterns underscore the variability and challenges posed by current meteorological conditions.
