TEPCO began discharging treated water from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant on April 10, 2025. This marks the beginning of its operations for fiscal year 2025, with plans to release 54,600 tons of water in seven rounds, while ensuring strong regulatory oversight on tritium levels.

On April 10, 2025, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. (TEPCO) initiated the discharge of treated water from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, marking its first operation of the fiscal year 2025. This discharge is the 12th since operations began in August 2023. TEPCO plans to release a total of approximately 54,600 tons of treated water, containing radioactive tritium, across seven rounds in this fiscal year.

The current discharge round will conclude on April 28. Like previous releases, TEPCO will discharge about 7,800 tons of treated water per operation, which will be diluted with substantial quantities of seawater. This water will be released through an undersea tunnel located one kilometer off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, northeast Japan.

Notably, in this round, TEPCO intends to increase the tritium concentration in the treated water compared to past discharges. Both TEPCO and the central government monitor tritium levels in seawater and local fishery products, with results confirming concentrations well below national safety standards, ensuring ecological safety during these operations.

TEPCO has commenced the discharge of treated water from the Fukushima plant for the fiscal year 2025, continuing a series of releases initiated in 2023. With plans for multiple rounds this year, enhanced monitoring of radiation levels asserts that safety standards are maintained throughout the discharge process, reinforcing the commitment to ecological safety.
