Chinese automotive giant BYD has unveiled new vehicle models in South Africa, including the Shark 6, Sealion 6, and Sealion 7. Known as the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD is competing closely with Tesla in the market. With the launch of the Shark 6, the Ford Ranger has lost its title as the fastest double-cab bakkie in the country.
The Shark 6 is a plug-in hybrid that offers both fuel and electric power modes, achieving a range of 670km under WLTP conditions, and a battery-only range of 85km. It features a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine and dual electric motors, delivering a combined power output of 321kW and torque of 650Nm.
The Sealion 6 is tailored for families, while the Sealion 7 is designed as a sporty coupe SUV, marking BYD’s fourth pure electric model available in South Africa. Notably, the Sealion 7 has one of the fastest electric motors in mass production, with the rear motor capable of speeds up to 23,000rpm and equipped with BYD’s Blade battery, offering an 82.56kWh capacity and a maximum WLTP range of 482km.
Steve Chang, managing director of BYD Auto SA, expressed excitement about the launch, stating, “We are thrilled to introduce the BYD Shark, Sealion 6, and Sealion 7 to South Africa. These vehicles reflect BYD’s commitment to technological innovation, sustainability, and excellence. With this launch, we are offering South African consumers a new level of performance, efficiency, and smart mobility solutions.”
By now, BYD offers six models in the South African market. In 2023, it started with the Atto 3, followed by the Dolphin hatchback and the dynamic Sealsedan. The recent releases complement BYD’s strategy to provide both PHEVs and EVs in South Africa.
BYD has successfully expanded its presence in South Africa with the launch of the Shark 6, Sealion 6, and Sealion 7. These models enhance their product lineup, emphasizing performance, technology, and sustainability. The introduction of the Shark 6 as the fastest double-cab bakkie demonstrates BYD’s competitive edge, while the Sealion models reflect advanced electric vehicle capabilities. The company’s growing portfolio marks significant strides in the local electric vehicle market.
