The IMD predicts above-normal temperatures and heatwaves this summer across India, with extended heatwave periods particularly in central and eastern regions. Heavy rainfall is expected in the Northeastern states, heightening flood risks. Authorities need to prepare for weather extremes as temperatures rise significantly through April.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that during this summer (April-June), most regions will experience above-normal temperatures, especially in central and eastern India. Extended heatwave episodes lasting up to 10-11 days are anticipated, particularly affecting areas such as Odisha, Jharkhand, and east Uttar Pradesh.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra noted that states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, and several others are likely to face above-normal heatwave days. Traditionally, heatwaves in these areas last four to seven days, but this summer is expected to see prolonged episodes.

From April 10 until the end of April, heavy rainfall is predicted for the Northeastern states, which increases the risk of floods and landslides. Additional regions like Kerala and south interior Karnataka will also witness above-normal rainfall coupled with thunderstorms. Municipal authorities are urged to remain alert and prepared.

This summer’s onset is predicted to be warm across southern Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and other regions. Daytime temperatures in these areas will be significantly higher than normal for April, alongside warmer than usual nights nationwide, except in Jammu and Kashmir and northeast regions.

Typically, heatwaves are common in eastern India, specifically over Jharkhand, Bihar, and parts of West Bengal. However, for April this year, extended heatwave activity is anticipated. During March, temperatures were generally within normal ranges, except for regions in central and southern India.

Intermittent rainfall has contributed to maintaining moderate temperatures in various states by affecting Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and parts of the Northwest. Additionally, continuing La Nina conditions in the equatorial Pacific indicate no El Nino likelihood this monsoon season, as per Mohapatra’s insights.

The IMD has forecast above-normal summer temperatures and extended heatwave episodes across much of India. Precautions against potential heavy rainfall and floods, particularly in the Northeast, have been advised. As the summer progresses, temperatures are expected to rise substantially, impacting various states significantly.
