Gagandeep Singh, known as Goldie, was arrested by the NIA for trafficking individuals via the ‘dunki’ route to the US. A victim from Punjab, who paid ₹45 lakh, was deported back to India after experiencing abuse during the journey. The NIA is conducting a broader investigation into human trafficking networks, with hundreds of deportations from the US this year.

Gagandeep Singh, also known as Goldie, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in New Delhi for allegedly trafficking individuals to the United States through the ‘dunki’ route. This route involves a complex journey through various countries, including Spain, Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. The victim, from Tarn Taran district in Punjab, reportedly paid approximately ₹45 lakh for this illegal immigration service.

The NIA’s investigation began after the victim, deported by US authorities on February 15, 2025, filed a complaint against Singh. Originally, the Punjab Police registered the case, but the NIA took over the investigation on March 13. Singh is accused of not having the necessary licenses or permits for overseas travel and exploiting the victim during the process.

Since January 2025, around 388 illegal immigrants have been deported to India from the US, with 333 individuals returned directly. The Punjab Police has initiated a special investigation team (SIT) to explore these trafficking networks and has filed multiple cases. The NIA is collaborating with US and Canadian law enforcement to gather further intelligence on agents operating in these countries.

Additionally, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is conducting a parallel investigation into illegal immigration practices via student visas. Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar informed the Rajya Sabha that 295 more individuals are currently detained in the US, awaiting removal, while the Indian government verifies their nationality.

The arrest of Gagandeep Singh for his role in human trafficking highlights the ongoing challenges of illegal immigration routes used by individuals seeking entry into the US. The NIA and Punjab Police are actively investigating these networks and cooperating with international law enforcement to curb this illegal activity, with a significant number of deportations already recorded this year.
