Japanese authorities have elevated the volcanic alert for Mount Shinmoe to Level 3 on a five-tier scale, limiting access to this volcano in the southwestern region of Japan. This decision was announced by the Japan Meteorological Agency at 3:53 a.m. on Sunday, following an earlier Level 2 alert that restricted access to the crater itself.
The current increase in alert level is due to a surge in volcanic tremors and earthquakes originating from directly underneath the crater, noted since Friday. Additionally, ground movements indicating the mountain’s expansion were recorded from 2:50 a.m. on Sunday, with volcanic tremors persisting for approximately ten minutes.
Satellite data confirms ongoing ground swelling in the vicinity since November of the previous year, showcasing heightened volcanic activity at Mount Shinmoe. Alerts have been issued indicating potential hazards, such as large volcanic rocks possibly being ejected up to four kilometers from the crater and pyroclastic flows reaching two kilometers.
There are also warnings regarding volcanic ash and small rocks that may be carried by winds to more distant locations. Furthermore, explosive eruptions could create air vibrations strong enough to shatter windows nearby.
Following the alert, the agency conducted a news conference at 6 a.m. on Sunday. Kanno Tomoyuki, the monitoring official, advised the public to adhere to municipal safety protocols and avoid entering hazardous zones. He specifically recommended that residents in downwind areas remain cautious of ash and falling debris, especially drivers.
Kanno also reminded the public about the 2011 explosive eruptions, where individuals sustained injuries from shattered windows caused by air pressure changes. He urged residents to remain vigilant, stay away from windows facing the mountain, and keep curtains drawn for safety.
