India has delivered 15 tonnes of relief materials to Myanmar following a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that led to around 700 fatalities. A transport aircraft from the Indian Air Force brought food and medical supplies, with additional aid planned. The earthquake caused significant destruction, particularly in Mandalay, and marked the largest seismic event in Myanmar in over a century.
On Saturday, India dispatched its first batch of 15 tonnes of relief materials to earthquake-stricken Myanmar, following a devastating 7.7-magnitude quake near Sagaing city. This earthquake, which struck on Friday afternoon, resulted in approximately 700 fatalities and significant destruction, particularly in Mandalay. The Indian Air Force’s transport aircraft delivered food, medical supplies, and a search and rescue team, with more aid planned for future dispatch.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced through social media that additional aid would follow, with two more aircraft set to depart from Hindon airbase. The quake was succeeded by a 6.7-magnitude aftershock, exacerbating the damage across several cities.
The earthquake impacted around 1.7 million residents in Mandalay, and led to injuries for approximately 1,700 individuals. There were also reports of casualties in Bangkok, Thailand, with ten fatalities. As a prompt response, India enacted “Operation Brahma,” emphasizing its role as a first responder in regional emergencies.
The relief consignment included essential items such as blankets, tents, hygiene kits, solar lamps, and medical supplies, which were handed over by India’s ambassador to Myanmar. The Indian embassy is coordinating with local authorities to ensure timely delivery of ongoing assistance and is also maintaining communication with the local Indian community for support.
In response to the massive earthquake that struck Myanmar, India has swiftly delivered humanitarian aid, signifying its commitment as a regional first responder. The provided assistance, including medical supplies and essential goods, acknowledges the urgent needs following this disaster. Authorities expect the death toll to rise as the situation develops, highlighting the need for continued support and coordination to address the crisis effectively.
