Forest fires have been raging in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, for five days since the initial blaze ignited. Aerial firefighting efforts resumed by Self-Defense Force helicopters on Thursday morning as the situation escalated.

The fire, which began in Imabari City, has spread to Saijo City, burning approximately 417 hectares by 2 p.m. Wednesday. It has caused damage to structures in four districts of Imabari, affecting 11 homes and warehouses.

As a precaution, Imabari officials issued evacuation orders affecting nearly 6,000 individuals. Currently, 77 people from 56 households are sheltering in seven designated evacuation centers, while Saijo houses 123 users and staff from welfare facilities.

In Imabari, many stores are closed, and postal services have been halted. A warning from the local power grid company indicates that a total blackout in Imabari could occur if the fire spreads further, prompting the company to advise residents to prepare for potential power outages.

Although the air remains dry, the Meteorological Agency has forecasted the possibility of rain and intensified winds affecting the regions of Imabari and Saijo through Friday.
