Japan Introduces Forgery-Proof Passport Applications
Japan has streamlined its passport application process to enhance security against forgery, implementing a new passport design featuring integrated pages and advanced laser printing technology based on banknote techniques. Existing passports will remain valid until they expire.
Japan has initiated a new streamlined procedure for the issuance of forgery-proof passports. This move is a significant enhancement to security measures aimed at combating counterfeiting and forgery in travel documents. According to the Foreign Ministry, these improvements incorporate suggestions made by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
As of the start of this application process, a redesigned passport will be issued for applications submitted from Monday onwards. Although the new design will include updated security features, existing passports will remain valid until their expiration date.
The most notable change in the new passport is the integration of the photo page and the IC chip page, now combined into a single plastic page. Personal information, including the holder’s name and photograph, will be printed with advanced laser technology akin to that used in banknote production, which will significantly increase the difficulty of producing forgeries.
The new passport design in Japan represents a crucial effort to mitigate counterfeiting risks by enhancing security features. Integrating the photo and IC chip pages, along with employing advanced printing technology, aims to ensure greater document integrity. Current passports will still be usable until their expiration, allowing for a smooth transition to the new design.
