Witkoff Optimistic About Ukraine Talks; No Russian Ambitions for Europe

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff expressed confidence in negotiations in Saudi Arabia, suggesting that Putin wants peace regarding the Ukraine war. He highlighted a probable ceasefire in the Black Sea and addressed EU concerns about further Russian ambitions. Upcoming talks on March 24 involve both Ukrainian and US teams, with Ukraine viewing the discussions primarily as bilateral with the US.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff expressed a positive outlook regarding the upcoming negotiations in Saudi Arabia, aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He remarked that Russian President Vladimir Putin is apparently keen on establishing peace, as reported by Reuters. Witkoff believes there could be tangible progress, particularly a potential ceasefire in the Black Sea, which may evolve into a full cessation of hostilities.
Witkoff addressed fears from European Union nations that a ceasefire agreement might enable Russia for further territorial advances, stating, “I just don’t see that he wants to take all of Europe,” contrasting the current situation with World War II where NATO did not exist. He reiterated that prioritizing the cessation of violence is crucial, emphasizing communication and understanding the needs of both parties involved.
In Saudi Arabia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian officials are scheduled to meet with American representatives on March 24 at a technical level. The US also plans to engage with Russia during the same meeting. However, Heorhii Tykhyi from Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that Ukraine sees this as a bilateral meeting with the US and has no intentions of direct negotiation with Russia.
The optimism expressed by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff surrounding the peace negotiations indicates a potential turning point in the Ukraine conflict. By focusing on communication and mutual understanding, Witkoff believes a Black Sea ceasefire can eventually halt hostilities. Despite concerns from EU nations, he sees no ambition from Putin to expand further into Europe. The upcoming meetings in Saudi Arabia represent critical steps towards peace.
