Mumbai Police’s Conduct in Sushant Singh Rajput Case Criticized by Ex-Bihar DGP

Following the CBI’s closure report on the case, Pandey refrained from commenting on the report itself, acknowledging the CBI as a “professional agency.” He accused the Mumbai Police of failing to cooperate with the Bihar Police, who were sent for further investigation.
Pandey described that an IPS officer he sent for better coordination with the Mumbai Police was quarantined, causing delays. The Bihar Police team was only permitted to investigate for five days before being dismissed. He emphasized that he never claimed Rajput was murdered; only that his death was suspicious and warranted further inquiry.
Speaking to ANI, Pandey mentioned that after Rajput’s death, momentum faded quickly, until his father filed a complaint in Patna. He reiterated that the Mumbai Police’s lack of cooperation raised public suspicion, indicating that better management could have alleviated the negative perception pressed against them.
He expressed concerns that the CBI might not have gathered all necessary evidence and suggested that evidence could have been compromised. Pandey reiterated his stance on the need for a thorough investigation without directly accusing anyone of foul play. He stated, “Had Mumbai Police handled the case well… they would not have been defamed.”
Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead in his apartment on June 14, 2020, prompting significant public outcry and demands for justice, leading to an eventual CBI investigation. The CBI recently submitted a closure report nearly five years after his death, stating the cause of death as asphyxia in the postmortem conducted by Cooper Hospital in Mumbai. The initial investigation was the responsibility of the Mumbai Police before the case transitioned to the CBI.
