K-9 veteran Frenky, a retired military dog, was reunited with his handler Kristin Vanderzanden after three years apart. K-9 veteran Frenky, a 10-year-old German shepherd trained in explosive detection and bite work, has been reunited with his handler, Army Staff Sgt. Kristin Vanderzanden, after three years apart. The reunion was facilitated by the American Humane Society (AHS) through its Military Working Dog (MWD) Reunification program in San Antonio. Frenky and Vanderzanden served together from 2017 to 2021, and he was retired in January 2021.
During her tenure with Frenky, Vanderzanden, who is a drill sergeant for the Army’s MWD program, experienced significant moments together, including two combat tours—one in Afghanistan for nine months and another in Iraq for ten months. Frenky showed remarkable composure during missions under stressful circumstances, becoming beloved by his Special Forces team for his amiable character.
Frenky and Vanderzanden’s bond extended beyond military duties; he often slept on the floor of her room during their deployment, highlighting their close relationship. She later completed 20 missions with Frenky, which included protecting the president and foreign dignitaries. After her reassignment to Fort Drum in 2021, Vanderzanden faced the emotional challenge of leaving Frenky behind, expressing, “it was like leaving a child behind.”
The AHS program arranged for Frenky’s transport from Fort Johnson, Louisiana, to San Antonio. They also promised to cover all of Frenky’s veterinary expenses throughout his life. Vanderzanden is eager to allow Frenky to enjoy retirement, stating he will now have the chance to relax in home settings instead of a kennel.
Dr. Robin Ganzert, AHS president and CEO, praised Frenky’s contributions, saying, “Frenky is an extraordinary dog who made invaluable contributions to our country.” She emphasized the honor felt by AHS in facilitating this reunion, underscoring the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by military working dogs alongside human service members. Frenky will now join Vanderzanden’s family, which includes her other dog, a mix of German shepherd and cattle dog named Cora.
