Germany has seized the oil tanker Eventin along with about 100,000 metric tons of oil, valued at approximately €40 million. The vessel, detained in the Baltic Sea, raises environmental concerns and is under investigation. Russia remains unaware of the situation, according to Kremlin officials.

Germany has issued a confiscation order for the oil tanker Eventin and approximately 100,000 metric tons of crude oil it carries. Reported by the German news magazine Spiegel, the combined value of the vessel and its cargo stands at around €40 million ($43.3 million). If confirmed, this order would transfer ownership to Germany.

The Eventin was located in the Baltic Sea near Rügen, heightening environmental concerns over a possible oil spill. The tanker was en route from Russia to Egypt when German authorities detained it for investigation in January. Current efforts involve assessing safe methods for extracting the crude oil and determining the vessel’s future.

A spokesman from the finance ministry stated, “Customs measures are currently underway and, given the current security situation, we cannot comment very extensively on the matter.” Analysts suggest that Russia is employing numerous vessels as a part of its shadow fleet to avoid sanctions on oil exports following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The German Foreign Office has refrained from providing in-depth details due to the sensitive geopolitical climate, merely confirming customs actions are in process. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov claimed that Moscow is unaware of the ship’s ownership or reasons behind its seizure, stating, “we had no information about the ship.”

Germany’s seizure of the Eventin oil tanker reflects ongoing tensions between Western nations and Russia, particularly regarding oil sanctions post-Ukraine invasion. The operation aims to manage environmental risks while highlighting the extensive measures Russia undertakes to sidestep economic penalties. The situation underscores both the strategic significance of maritime operations and the complexities involved in international sanctions enforcement.
