The 30th anniversary of the Tokyo subway sarin attack by Aum Shinrikyo highlights the tragic events of March 20, 1995, where 14 people died and 6,300 were injured. The cult’s leaders were sentenced to death, and although they are gone, successors remain active. Calls to educate younger generations about this attack are increasing, as is an event to commemorate the victims.

Thursday marks the 30th anniversary of the sarin nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway by the Aum Shinrikyo cult. On March 20, 1995, cult members released sarin inside trains across three subway lines, resulting in 14 fatalities and approximately 6,300 injuries.

Thirteen leaders of the cult, including Asahara Shoko (born Matsumoto Chizuo), were convicted and sentenced to death for their roles in the attack, with executions carried out in 2018. Meanwhile, three successor groups of Aum Shinrikyo remain active and are monitored under laws designed to prevent mass murder.

The Public Security Intelligence Agency actively raids these successor groups’ facilities. There is a rising demand from bereaved families and affected individuals to ensure that the lessons learned from this act of terror are passed on to future generations, especially as younger people are largely unaware of the incident.

To commemorate the anniversary, a special stand will be established at Kasumigaseki subway station, allowing mourners to place flowers at the attack site. Silent prayers are scheduled for 8 a.m., coinciding with the time the attack occurred.

The 30th anniversary of the Tokyo subway sarin attack serves as a somber reminder of the tragedy inflicted by Aum Shinrikyo. Although the leaders responsible have been executed, the ongoing activities of successor groups warrant vigilance. Emphasizing education about the attack is crucial for future generations, reinforcing the need for remembrance and prevention against similar acts of terror.
