Russia and Ukraine executed a prisoner exchange involving 175 soldiers from each side, mediated by the UAE, with additional wounded prisoners returned. The exchange follows a diplomatic call between Presidents Trump and Putin, highlighting the extensive efforts involved in the negotiations.

On March 19, 2025, Russia announced a major prisoner exchange with Ukraine, as stated by Russia’s Defence Ministry. The exchange involved 175 soldiers from each side, facilitated by a telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Additionally, Russia released 22 seriously wounded Ukrainian prisoners needing urgent medical assistance as a gesture of goodwill.

The United Arab Emirates played a significant role as a mediator in this exchange. Following the deal, the newly freed Russian soldiers will remain in Belarus while they wait for further transit back to Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky referred to the event as one of the largest prisoner exchanges to date, confirming the return of 175 detainees, including 22 who were brought back through different means apart from direct exchanges.

The recent prisoner exchange reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts between Russia and Ukraine, facilitated by international mediation. The inclusion of severely wounded soldiers highlights a humanitarian aspect amid ongoing conflict. This event underscores the significance of high-level communications between leaders in negotiating critical resolutions in wartime situations.
