In February 2022, Tharoor highlighted India’s complex negotiating situation regarding the Ukraine crisis, criticizing its reluctance to firmly condemn Russia’s actions. He stated, “I am still wiping the egg of my face… who actually criticised the Indian position at that time.” His condemnation was rooted in the violation of the UN Charter and principles of sovereignty, emphasizing that India traditionally opposes the use of force in resolving disputes.

Tharoor pointed out that India’s geographical distance from Europe positions it uniquely to contribute to peace efforts, should it be needed. He noted that while he cannot represent the government’s views as an opposition member, there might be openness to sending peacekeepers if an agreement between Russia and Ukraine is reached.

Clarifying his stance, Tharoor contrasted potential peacekeeping roles in Ukraine with past resistance to deploying troops in Iraq in 2003, where Parliament had collectively opposed such action. He expressed confidence that, under the right conditions, India’s parliament might be more receptive to a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine than it was previously in Iraq.
