Ranya Rao Alleges Verbal Torture Amid Gold Smuggling Case

Kannada actress Ranya Rao, arrested for gold smuggling, claims she faced psychological abuse in DRI custody, ruling out physical torture. The DRI denies the allegations, citing CCTV evidence. She remains in judicial custody, with investigations ongoing into her smuggling operation and associates, while her stepfather publicly distances himself from her actions.
Ranya Rao, a Kannada actress caught smuggling gold worth Rs 14.56 crore, described herself as “traumatised and emotionally broken,” claiming she underwent verbal abuse during her custody by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). In court, she clarified there was no physical torture but emphasized the psychological impact of her treatment. The DRI refuted her allegations, stating all procedures were documented via CCTV.
This revelation arose after the media showcased an image of Rao with visible injuries, prompting speculation about potential assault during her arrest. However, Karnataka State Commission for Women Chairperson, Nagalakshmi Chaudhary, noted that an investigation could not be initiated without a formal complaint from Rao.
Rao is currently in judicial custody until March 24, with a bail hearing set for Tuesday. The actress, linked to high-profile IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, was detained after returning from Dubai where she had made multiple trips over a short period. Investigators discovered gold jewelry and cash in her residence valued at over Rs 4.67 crore.
Rao’s international travels, including a total of 27 trips to Dubai last year, raised red flags for authorities, as she allegedly concealed gold bars on her body during flights. Two associates of Rao have also been arrested. In response to these allegations, her stepfather, Ramachandra Rao, has publicly expressed shock, distancing himself from her actions and stating his lack of involvement in her personal matters.
Ranya Rao’s case presents serious allegations of verbal abuse in custody, yet the physical torture claims were dismissed by the DRI. Investigation continues amid an ongoing legal battle over her bail and allegations of smuggling. This incident raises important questions regarding the treatment of individuals in custody, especially amidst a backdrop of declining public trust in law enforcement. The involvement of Rao’s high-profile stepfather adds another layer of complexity.
