Hit-and-Run Incident Claims Life of Delhi Teen and Shocks Community

Rishal Singh, a dedicated Delhi University student, was killed in a hit-and-run accident while delivering newspapers. Police arrested Pankaj and Saurabh Gupta just before they could destroy evidence of the crash. Rishal supported his family through his work, and his death has left them devastated and seeking justice.
Nineteen-year-old Rishal Singh was dedicated to his education and family, delivering newspapers to finance his studies at Delhi University. Sadly, his aspirations were abruptly ended when a reckless driver struck his bicycle in northwest Delhi’s Rohini area during his morning rounds, resulting in his death. The driver did not stop to render aid.
Following the incident, police swiftly resolved the hit-and-run case by tracing the responsible vehicle and its occupants before crucial evidence could be compromised. Arrested were 40-year-old Pankaj Gupta and his 26-year-old nephew, Saurabh Gupta, shortly after the accident.
Details from police revealed that Saurabh was speeding back from a temple when he collided with Rishal’s bike on March 1st at approximately 6 am. The force of the impact catapulted Rishal onto the car’s windscreen, as his bicycle became lodged beneath the vehicle, which then fled the scene.
To find the vehicle responsible for the tragedy, investigators reviewed footage from over 150 CCTV cameras. This led to tracking the car back to a garage in Panipat, Haryana, where they discovered damage to the windscreen and bonnet. The suspects attempted to repair the car to conceal evidence, but police apprehended them in time to recover the vehicle.
Originally from Budh Vihar, Rishal had four siblings—three married sisters and a younger brother in Class 8. His father was a laborer, and Rishal’s paper route earned approximately Rs 10,000 monthly, supporting both his family and his education. His untimely death not only extinguished his dreams but also devastated his family, who now seek justice for their loss.
This case highlights the importance of accountability in traffic incidents, particularly hit-and-runs. The swift actions taken by the police to locate the suspect and recover the vehicle underscore the critical role of technology, such as CCTV footage, in solving crimes. The tragic fate of Rishal Singh serves as a reminder of the human cost of reckless driving, impacting families and communities deeply.
