Gang-Rape of Israeli Tourist and Indian Operator Raises Alarms Over Safety in India

Two women, including an Israeli tourist and an Indian homestay operator, have been gang-raped near a UNESCO World Heritage site in Hampi, Karnataka. They were attacked while stargazing with three male tourists by a lake. Police Superintendent Ram Arasiddi reported that the assailants forced the men into the Tungabhadra River canal before assaulting the women.
Surviving members of the group included one American man, while another male tourist was murdered. The incident occurred on a Thursday night, and authorities confirmed that five individuals were involved—two women and three men. Police have apprehended two suspects and are continuing the investigation.
According to witness accounts, prior to the attack, three men on a motorcycle inquired about petrol. When denied, they demanded money, leading to an argument during which one tourist gave them 20 rupees. Subsequently, a male tourist’s body was discovered in the canal.
The local Gangavathi Rural Police Station has filed a case involving extortion, robbery, gang-rape, and attempted murder. The victims are currently receiving medical care at a hospital. Hampi, known for its ancient ruins and temples, was designated a UNESCO site in 1986.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the attack, describing it as a heinous act. He stated that once reported, he immediately sought updates from police and stressed the need for a timely investigation. The police have made two arrests linked to the incident that has drawn significant attention in light of recent violence against women in India.
