A tragic incident has occurred involving a 20-year-old NEET aspirant, Satyam Katre, who recently dropped out of a coaching institute in Kota. In a fit of rage, he bludgeoned his mother, Pratibha, to death and severely injured his father, Kishore, with an iron rod after an argument over his mobile phone usage. The attack highlights the extreme pressures faced by students in competitive exam environments.

The incident took place as Satyam was unable to manage the intense pressure associated with clearing the Northeast Entrance Test (NEET). This exam is particularly significant, with only 1.3 million out of 2.3 million candidates successfully passing each year. Students flock to Kota, a prominent hub for exam preparation, where the coaching industry is valued at ₹10,000 crore.

Kota has witnessed a troubling frequency of student suicides tied to the high-pressure atmosphere, with official data indicating 20 student suicides in 2023 alone. Despite governmental efforts to address this disturbing trend, coaching centers continue to face criticism for their harsh methods, which many attribute to the mental health crises experienced by students.

According to police officers, Satyam expressed that he felt inflamed by parental expectations to excel in NEET, which contributed to his violent actions. After attacking his parents, he contacted the police himself, and both victims were urgently transported to local hospitals for treatment, with the father in critical condition.

Community members and family are also reflective of the changes seen in Satyam following his time in Kota, indicating he exhibited signs of severe stress and was significantly impacted by the pursuit of academic success. His uncle revealed that Satyam had returned a “changed person,” highlighting the deep effects of academic pressure extensively present within competitive educational environments.
