Congress Leader Demands Government Action for Indian Shot Dead in Jordan

Congress leader V D Satheesan has requested the Indian government to cover repatriation costs for Gabriel, who was shot in Jordan. He also called for an investigation into the circumstances of Gabriel’s death, stressing the family’s financial incapacity during this distressing time.
V D Satheesan, the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, has formally requested External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to facilitate the repatriation of the mortal remains of an Indian citizen shot dead in Jordan. Satheesan emphasized the financial distress faced by the family of Gabriel (Ani Thomas Gabriel), urging that the central government cover the repatriation costs and instruct the Indian Embassy in Jordan to expedite the process.
The family of Gabriel has been requested to handle specific expenses related to bringing back his remains, which they cannot afford due to their emotional and financial burden. Satheesan specifically asked Jaishankar for financial support from the embassy in Jordan to ensure prompt action in repatriating Gabriel’s body to Kerala.
Additionally, Satheesan called for an investigation into the circumstances of Gabriel’s death, which he asserted was unlawful. He noted that Gabriel was in Jordan on a legitimate tourist visa, having acquired a three-month stay permit, making the incident particularly alarming.
Gabriel’s family received an official email from the Indian Embassy on March 1st confirming his death, which occurred on February 10th. Reports indicate that Gabriel and his relative, Edison, who was also shot but survived, were part of a group trying to cross from Jordan into Israel when they were intercepted by Jordanian soldiers. In the chaos, Gabriel sustained a gunshot wound to the head, while Edison was injured in the leg and later repatriated to India after treatment.
The tragic incident involving Gabriel has prompted calls for both immediate governmental action to assist his grieving family and a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death. With the family unable to bear the repatriation costs, there is a clear need for intervention from the central government through its embassy in Jordan to ensure Gabriel’s remains are returned home swiftly.
