The tragic deaths of three Dey family members in Kolkata stemmed from a suicide pact linked to a ₨ 16 crore debt. After a failed drug-induced suicide attempt, Prasun Dey confessed to murdering his wife, daughter, and sister-in-law. Following a car crash while attempting suicide, Prasun was arrested.

On February 19, police discovered the bodies of three family members in their Tangra home on the outskirts of Kolkata. This revelation emerged after two brothers and their nephew crashed a car, allegedly attempting suicide, leading to their hospitalization and subsequent confession about the bodies. The authorities learned that Prasun Dey had confessed to killing his wife Romi, their 14-year-old daughter, and his sister-in-law Sudeshna, reportedly stemming from a crushing Rs 16 crore debt.

The Dey brothers, Pranay and Prasun, along with their families, had initially attempted to die by suicide using sleeping pills mixed with ‘payesh’ on February 17. However, when the plan failed, they resorted to a more drastic approach. Under interrogation, Prasun detailed the gruesome events, stating he smothered his daughter before his wife followed by slitting her wrists and throat, subsequently doing the same to his sister-in-law.

After committing the murders, Prasun and his brother, alongside his nephew, attempted to flee in a car but collided with a pillar around 3 a.m. They claimed this was another suicide attempt. While recovering from injuries at a hospital under police surveillance, Prasun was later arrested and presented before a court, where he was remanded to police custody until March 6.

The source of their despair was revealed to be a significant financial burden, as the family was struggling under a ₨ 16 crore debt, which reportedly included overdue EMIs of approximately ₨ 47 lakh for two of their cars. This financial crisis was purportedly a catalyst for the tragic murders and subsequent suicide attempts.

The tragic case of the Dey family highlights the severe implications of overwhelming financial burdens. Prasun Dey’s confession sheds light on the extreme measures taken in the wake of their economic hardship, culminating in a horrific triple murder and suicide pact. The ongoing investigation is crucial in understanding the depth of the family’s struggles, emphasizing the need for awareness and resources for those in financial distress.
