President Trump has nominated Emil Bove, a former personal attorney and current DOJ official, to the US Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. While receiving praise from Trump, Bove’s confirmation is expected to face scrutiny from Democrats over his controversial actions at the DOJ, including pressuring prosecutors and threatening legal actions against state officials. Bove has risen quickly in the Trump administration, focusing largely on enforcing immigration policies.

President Donald Trump has nominated his former personal attorney, Emil Bove, to serve as a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. The announcement came via Trump’s social media on Wednesday, where he praised Bove as “smart, tough, and respected by everyone.”

Trump’s endorsement continues with a strong proclamation of Bove’s potential impact, emphasizing his intention to combat what he calls the “Weaponization of Justice” and restore the rule of law. “Emil Bove will never let you down!” Trump asserted.

However, the path to confirmation isn’t expected to be smooth. Democrats in Congress are likely to scrutinise Bove’s actions while at the Justice Department, particularly those that triggered significant resignations amid controversial policies pursued during Trump’s presidency. Bove played a direct role in many of those initiatives.

Since joining the DOJ, Bove has emerged as a powerful figure in Trump’s inner circle. Soon after his appointment, he issued a memo threatening prosecution of officials resisting Trump’s immigration policies. Bove also pressured prosecutors to drop corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, which stirred backlash among federal and state prosecutors.

Amidst these developments, Bove ordered the firing of eight senior FBI officials and sought information on numerous employees involved in investigations linked to the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Now, Bove is working as the top deputy to the DOJ’s number two official, Todd Blanche, primarily focusing on enforcing Trump’s immigration reform agenda.

Speaking on Bove’s nomination, Blanche expressed pride in his friend’s potential judicial appointment, stating, “His dedication, integrity, and brilliant legal mind will make him an excellent judge. Well earned, my friend!”

Apart from Bove, several of Trump’s former attorneys, like John Sauer and Todd Blanche, have been nominated for significant positions within the administration as well. Bove has also been involved in launching the new Weaponization Working Group aimed at investigating current and former prosecutors and FBI personnel.

During his tenure with Trump, Bove provided legal counsel in federal criminal cases that were later dismissed and in the ongoing New York hush-money case in which Trump faced numerous charges. When approached for comment, Bove refrained from discussing his nomination further. The story is ongoing as more updates come in, contributed by CNN’s Paula Reid.
