Launch of Cinamaa Platform Enhances Film Studies in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Film Commission has launched a new initiative called “Cinamaa,” aimed at enhancing film studies and supporting emerging filmmakers in Saudi Arabia. The launch event took place at the Cultural Palace in Riyadh and was organized in collaboration with the National Film Archive. Cinamaa will serve as a platform for education, allowing users to access articles, research studies, film discussions, workshops, and short films that cover a variety of relevant topics.
Salma Tarek, a professor from Cairo University, highlighted the crucial role of academic film studies during a panel discussion. She noted a distinction between traditional university-level education and technical training provided by film institutes, advocating for inclusion of cinematic education in schools. Tarek emphasized the importance of teaching students to understand and interpret films as a critical medium in our culture.
She suggested that institutions could contribute to a cinematic culture by offering interdisciplinary courses, merging literature and history with film studies. Such courses can lay the groundwork for future cinema studies departments within universities. Increasing original Arabic content in cinema, alongside translations, was also deemed necessary for cultural development.
The event included the signing of two memoranda of understanding between the Saudi Film Commission and other partners, including the Saudi Broadcasting Authority. The establishment of the Cinema Critics Association was also announced, aimed at fostering professional film criticism in Saudi Arabia. The launch culminated in an exhibition showcasing film history in the Arab world, promoting awareness and appreciation of cinema.
