Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, a 24-year-old American YouTuber from Scottsdale, Arizona, has been detained in India after illegally visiting North Sentinel Island, a restricted territory. His court appearance is scheduled for April 29 in Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Polyakov was arrested on March 31, two days following his landing on the island, aiming to reach the isolated Sentinelese tribe.
An anonymous police source stated, “It may be claimed to be an adventure trip, but the fact is that there has been a violation of Indian laws. Outsiders meeting Sentinelese could endanger the tribe’s survival.” Polyakov faces possible imprisonment of up to five years and a fine for breaking Indian law.
Access to North Sentinel Island is prohibited within a 3-mile radius due to the isolation of its inhabitants, who have lived apart from modern society for thousands of years. They are known to wield weapons to protect their territory from outsiders, as evidenced by past violent encounters with uninvited visitors.
In 2018, an American missionary was killed by the tribe after illegally landing, highlighting the danger of such incursions. Polyakov conducted thorough research on the area’s sea conditions prior to his attempt, but did not receive any response from the Sentinelese after spending about an hour on the beach.
In a prior effort to make contact, Polyakov left a can of Diet Coke and a coconut as offerings after failing to engage with the tribe. He also recorded video footage and collected sand samples before returning to his boat, where he was subsequently apprehended by authorities after being reported by local fishermen.
Mykhailo Polyakov remains in custody for trespassing on North Sentinel Island as he sought to connect with the isolated Sentinelese tribe.
