The Trump administration expresses optimism in achieving a fair peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. However, many in Ukraine maintain a cautious, if not pessimistic stance concerning this prospect, indicating that influential officials, such as Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, appear overly accommodating toward Moscow, as cited by News.az from The Washington Times.

Skepticism about the U.S. ceasefire efforts centers on the belief that the administration will not apply significant pressure on Russia to secure a just and enduring peace. Alexander Khara, a former Ukrainian diplomat, criticized Witkoff’s role, asserting that he merely relayed Kremlin messages without active mediation.

Khara remarks, “We do not expect the Trump administration to exert any pressure on Russia,” suggesting that the administration may see Ukraine as a hindrance to the desired U.S.-Russia reset, more critical to Trump than Ukrainian stability. This assertion sparked a strong rebuttal from the administration.

President Trump expressed frustration with Putin for obstructing a peace deal, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned recent Russian military actions, specifically the missile attack in Sumy, labeling it “horrifying.” The administration is reportedly contemplating imposing significant economic sanctions targeting Russia’s energy exports.

Following his meeting with Putin, Witkoff identified the “five territories,” including the annexed Crimea and regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, as crucial factors for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
