Saudi Arabia’s Potential Formula 1 Team Takeover on the Horizon
Saudi Arabia’s motorsport chairman hints at potential ownership of an F1 team, with interest in establishing a Saudi team amid an evolving F1 landscape. The logistical demands of hosting two races are acknowledged, yet there is optimism for enhanced presence in the sport.
As the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix approaches, the chairman of the Saudi motorsports federation indicates that a takeover of a Formula 1 team by Saudi Arabia might be imminent. The nation debuted on the Formula 1 calendar in 2021 alongside Qatar, and this season’s race at the Jeddah Corniche circuit is set for round five of the 2025 championship.
Saudi Arabia is one of four Middle Eastern countries with a permanent position in Formula 1 but lacks ownership of a team, contrasting with Bahrain, which fully acquired the McLaren Group, including its F1 team, in 2021. There is speculation that Saudi Arabia could pursue a similar path, as the profitability of owning an F1 team is acknowledged.
However, entering the ownership of a Formula 1 team would require significant financial investment, with existing teams estimated to be valued at least £1 billion each. Currently, team owners do not appear willing to sell, making the acquisition complex.
Prince Khalid bin Sultan Al-Abdullah Al-Faisal remarked, “It could happen soon if you see the growth, first of all.” He noted that any acquisition would be motivated by financial gain and highlighted the increasing global interest and commercial partnerships within F1, such as that of Aramco with Aston Martin.
The prince emphasizes the importance of selecting the right team for purchase and effectively managing it, noting the sport’s growing competitiveness and forthcoming regulatory changes, including the potential return of V10 engines in 2026. He acknowledged that while there is substantial interest to establish a Saudi team, prudent planning is essential for success.
In addition to craving team ownership, Prince Khalid wishes for two Formula 1 races hosted in Saudi Arabia, one in Jeddah and another at the future Qiddiya circuit in Riyadh. He stated the desire for two races stems from the country’s diverse markets and large population, yet expressed caution regarding logistics and the complexity of the race calendar.
Despite these challenges, the potential for increased Formula 1 presence in Saudi Arabia is recognized, similar to the U.S. model which includes three races. The ongoing evolution of F1 continues to present Saudi Arabia with opportunities for growth and visibility in international motorsport.
