KwaZulu-Natal Prepares for Heavy Rain and Snowfall Alerts

KwaZulu-Natal is under high alert for heavy rain and potential snowfall, with warnings issued by the South African Weather Service. Disaster management teams, led by the provincial MEC, are prepared to monitor and manage road conditions during the busy Easter travel period. RTI will ensure the safety of major routes and manage potential congestion.
KwaZulu-Natal is currently under alert due to forecasts of heavy rain and potential snowfall, as reported by IOL. The provincial MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has received a warning from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) regarding a cold front that is expected to cause a significant drop in temperatures. Although snowfall has not been confirmed, motorists are advised to stay updated and drive cautiously.
A Yellow Level 4 warning for disruptive rain has been issued for the majority of KZN, while a Level 2 warning applies to certain areas in the Eastern Cape. Duma indicated that the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) will monitor traffic conditions closely during this time. The RTI is prepared to coordinate necessary road closures and oversee major transport routes, including the N3 corridor through Harrismith, Tugela Toll, the R617 between Kokstad and Underberg, as well as routes near Mooi River and the N2 Ingeli.
To prevent congestion, the RTI plans to escort trucks traversing these critical routes. Duma also noted that graders are strategically stationed along key routes to ensure prompt responses to any issues that may arise. This advisory coincides with peak travel activity as many individuals prepare for Easter travel, a period known for high fatal crash rates in KZN in 2024.
KwaZulu-Natal is on high alert as heavy rainfall and the possibility of snow approach the region, prompting responses from disaster management teams. The RTI is on standby to monitor traffic and ensure road safety, especially with potential disruptions expected during the busy Easter travel period. Motorists are urged to remain vigilant and stay informed of any updates regarding weather and traffic conditions.
