AIADMK Signals Temporary Alliance with BJP for 2026 Elections

The AIADMK has hinted at a temporary alliance with the BJP for the upcoming Tamil Nadu election, stating it may not lead to a coalition government. Recently, the AIADMK and BJP formed an alliance for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu elections. However, comments from AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) indicate that this partnership may only be temporary, aimed solely at achieving electoral success. EPS’s assertion raises questions about the potential for a coalition government post-elections.

EPS’s remarks diverge from those of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who stated that both parties would contest together without any preconditions. After the announcement, EPS characterized the alliance as one built on mutual aspirations for Tamil Nadu’s advancement and recognized Prime Minister Modi’s support.

Sources suggest internal dissent among AIADMK members regarding the alliance due to fears of alienating minority voters and the coalition’s previous election failures. The AIADMK’s performance in the last elections saw a significant decline, going from 136 to 75 seats in the 2021 assembly elections, while the BJP was not successful in winning any seats in recent contests.

In light of these disappointments, the BJP is reassessing its strategy in Tamil Nadu where the DMK and AIADMK have historically dominated. Notably, the previous alliance had deteriorated following controversial comments made by previous BJP state chief K. Annamalai about AIADMK leaders. This led to demands for Annamalai’s resignation, which the BJP declined, leading to tensions.

Nonetheless, with the revival of their alliance, the BJP replaced Annamalai with Nainar Nagenthiran, a former AIADMK leader, in a strategic move designed to improve relations and public perception in Tamil Nadu.
