TEPCO Initiates Second Phase of Nuclear Debris Removal at Fukushima

TEPCO has begun its second nuclear debris removal operation at Fukushima’s No. 1 plant, focusing on extracting up to three grams from the No. 2 reactor. This endeavor aims to approach the reactor containment vessel more closely than in previous attempts. The analysis from this operation will aid in future removal strategies.
Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. (TEPCO) initiated its second round of experimental nuclear fuel debris removal at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant on April 15, 2025. This operation aims to extract up to three grams of radioactive debris from the meltdown-affected No. 2 reactor over a two-week period. For this operation, TEPCO plans to advance closer to the reactor’s containment vessel than they did during the first experiment conducted last year.
The analysis of the constituents collected during this operation will contribute to research efforts focused on achieving a comprehensive debris removal strategy. Continuous progress in tackling nuclear debris management is crucial for TEPCO’s long-term decommissioning plans for Fukushima, especially in ensuring safety and environmental considerations in subsequent stages.
TEPCO has commenced its second experimental removal of nuclear fuel debris at the Fukushima No. 1 plant, with a target of three grams from the No. 2 reactor. This operation represents a step closer toward comprehensive removal strategies with further analysis to follow. Safeguarding nuclear sites remains a priority in Japan’s nuclear decommissioning efforts.
