The detainees, who were filmed upon their capture on April 8, asserted they had not engaged in combat against Ukrainian forces upon their arrival at the front lines. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remarked that at least 155 Chinese nationals were fighting for Russia, a claim that Beijing rejected as “irresponsible.” China maintains that it strongly advises its nationals against participating in military operations and claims to promote peace in Ukraine.
