Josh Sullivan, a U.S. missionary from Tennessee, was kidnapped at gunpoint during a church service in South Africa. Armed suspects abducted him in Motherwell, and the South African police are leading the investigation. His mother and church confirmed the incident, while the U.S. State Department is monitoring the situation.

Josh Sullivan, an American missionary from Tennessee, was reportedly kidnapped at gunpoint in South Africa during a church service last Thursday. Armed men forced their way into a church located in Motherwell, a township near Gqeberha, and abducted him, according to a post from his church, Fellowship Baptist Church in Mossy Grove, Tennessee. The South African Police Service’s elite Hawks unit is currently investigating the incident.

During the incident around 7 p.m. local time, witnesses reported that at least four armed suspects confronted Sullivan and forced him into his own vehicle before fleeing the scene. Capt. Andre Beetge confirmed that the stolen vehicle, a silver Toyota 4Runner, was discovered abandoned shortly after the kidnapping. The police have since activated a multidisciplinary task team to follow leads in the search for Sullivan and the capture of the suspects.

Although specific details regarding Sullivan’s nationality were initially withheld by the police, he has been identified by his church as their pastor. His mother, Tonya Rinker, has confirmed his abduction, expressing her trust in faith amid the crisis. She described him as an exceptional father and husband, known for his humor and dedication to help others in South Africa.

A spokesperson from the U.S. State Department acknowledged awareness of the reports concerning Sullivan’s kidnapping. Sullivan has been church-planting in South Africa since November 2018, alongside his wife and children, aiming to run a local Baptist church. He has been a part of Fellowship Baptist Church in Mossy Grove since 2012.

The kidnapping of Josh Sullivan highlights significant concerns regarding the safety of missionaries abroad, especially in regions known for violent crime. Sullivan’s abduction during a church service has prompted both local authorities and the U.S. State Department to take action. The active search and community support for his safe return underscore the importance of his work and the impact of his disappearance on his family and church community.
