Cell C confirms a data leak caused by a cyberattack from RansomHouse, affecting sensitive information of its 7.7 million subscribers. The hackers stole 2TB of data, prompting the company to urge caution against phishing and identity theft, while they collaborate with cybersecurity experts to address the breach.
Cell C, South Africa’s fourth-largest mobile network operator with 7.7 million subscribers, confirmed a data leak traced back to a cyberattack by the hacker group RansomHouse. This breach reportedly resulted in 2TB of sensitive data being exfiltrated and subsequently leaked on the dark web. Unauthorized access to certain IT systems allowed hackers to compromise significant customer information, although the number of affected individuals is still unspecified.
The leaked data includes various personal details such as full names, contact information, ID numbers, banking details, driver’s license numbers, medical records, and passport information. In light of this breach, Cell C is advising affected customers to remain vigilant against possible phishing attempts and identity theft, given that the data has been made public by the attackers.
Cell C has not confirmed if any ransom was demanded or if negotiations occurred with RansomHouse. The company is currently collaborating with international cybersecurity experts and authorities to assess the situation and provide updates to stakeholders. CEO Jorge Mendes expressed concern, stating, “We understand the seriousness of this development and deeply regret the distress or concern it may cause.”
RansomHouse, emerging in March 2022, is recognized for its unique extortion techniques, opting not to encrypt data but instead threatening public releases of the stolen information. This group positions itself as a “force for good” by revealing corporate vulnerabilities. They have a history of targeting significant organizations, including chip maker AMD, supermarket chain Shoprite Group, and the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.
