Tahawwur Hussain Rana, an alleged mastermind behind the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, is being extradited to India following the exhaustion of all his legal appeals in the US against extradition. A special flight carrying him took off from the United States on Wednesday evening and is scheduled to arrive in Delhi later today. Upon arrival, he is expected to be arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and presented in aDelhi court.

Rana is described as a close associate of David Headley, the key conspirator in the 26/11 attacks. He is accused of playing a significant role by providing logistical and financial support, including establishing a front office in Mumbai, which was instrumental in planning the attacks that claimed 166 lives.

Born on January 12, 1961, in Chichawatni, Punjab, Pakistan, Rana was educated at Cadet College Hasan Abdal, where he became friends with Headley. After serving as a captain in the Pakistan Army Medical Corps, he migrated to Canada in 1997 with his wife, who is also a physician. Both became naturalized Canadian citizens in 2001.

Tahawwur Rana’s extradition to India marks a significant step in legal action related to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. His role, alongside David Headley, highlights a coordinated effort in the conspiracy that led to a tragic loss of life. Following exhaustion of legal channels in the US, Rana’s return for prosecution underscores ongoing international cooperation in combatting terrorism.
