Syed Md A Razi, the Principal Secretary of Meghalaya, was discovered dead in his hotel room in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, following a lack of response to phone calls on Monday morning. Hotel staff acted on the situation by breaking down the door, only to find Razi’s lifeless body inside. Razi was reportedly visiting Uzbekistan for private reasons and is suspected to have died from a cardiac arrest. His wife is currently en route to Bukhara, as formalities are being handled by local authorities.

Razi had been on deputation to the state since 2021 as an Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer and had arrived in Uzbekistan on April 4. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed profound sorrow, stating that Razi’s remarkable efficiency and devotion in his administrative roles inspired many. Sangma emphasized that Razi was not only dedicated but also a joyful person who was cherished by all, leaving a significant void in the community.

Former cabinet minister James K Sangma also mourned Razi’s passing, recalling their work together when Razi served as Commissioner Secretary during his tenure as Forest Minister. The loss of such a dedicated public servant has elicited tributes highlighting his contributions and characteristics, indicative of the impact he had on his colleagues and the community.
