Polyakov, armed with GPS navigation and binoculars, attempted to reach the island’s shores, spending nearly an hour on the beach while trying to attract the islanders’ attention, but with no success.
After leaving his offerings of a Diet Coke can and a coconut, he filmed the encounter before departing on his boat. Local fishermen spotted Polyakov and alerted the authorities, leading to his arrest in Port Blair. He faces charges for violating strict Indian regulations against outsider interaction with the islanders.
Police outlined that Polyakov deliberated extensively over maritime conditions before attempting the journey, indicating a premeditated approach. Senior Police Officer Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal stated that his plans posed significant risks to the Sentinelese, whose way of life is legally protected against outside contact.
Polyakov allegedly had made two prior attempts to visit the islands, driven by a fascination with the Sentinelese culture and a penchant for adventure.
