NIA Arrests Key Suspect in Human Trafficking Case Using ‘Dunki’ Route

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) recently apprehended Gagandeep Singh, also known as Goldie, a key individual in a human trafficking operation utilizing the notorious ‘dunki’ route to illegally transport individuals to the United States. The ‘dunki’ route, derived from “donkey”, symbolizes an illicit pathway for undocumented immigrants seeking entry into the US. The NIA stated that Goldie, a resident of Tilak Nagar in West Delhi, was arrested following an investigation into his activities.

Goldie allegedly received approximately Rs 45 lakh from a victim from Tarn Taran, Punjab for illegal immigration services. In December 2024, the victim was sent to the US via the ‘dunki’ route and was later deported back to India on February 15 by US authorities. Following his deportation, the victim reported Goldie to law enforcement, prompting further investigation into the matter.

Initially, the Punjab Police registered the case before it was taken over by the NIA on March 13. Investigations indicated that Goldie operated without any legal permits to facilitate international migration. He guided the victim through a complex journey that included transit through Spain, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico, before reaching the US.

The investigation uncovered further abuses where Goldie’s associates reportedly assaulted and exploited the victim, even stealing the currency he carried during his perilous travels. According to Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, a total of 636 Indian nationals have been deported from the US since January 2025, emphasizing the ongoing issue of human trafficking.

The NIA’s arrest of Gagandeep Singh highlights a serious concern regarding human trafficking in India, particularly through the illegal ‘dunki’ route. This case underscores the dangers faced by individuals seeking illegal immigration, often at the hands of unscrupulous traffickers.
