Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested placing Ukraine under a temporary UN administration as part of a peace process, involving countries like North Korea and other BRICS nations. Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed that Ukraine might be placed under a “temporary administration” by the United Nations as part of a peace agreement involving North Korea and other allies of Moscow. Addressing servicemen in Murmansk, Putin outlined his vision for a resolution to the ongoing conflict stemming from Russia’s invasion in February 2022, as reported by the Russian state media TASS.
Among his suggestions, Putin recommended conducting new elections in Ukraine alongside the signing of critical agreements following the establishment of international oversight. He stated, “In principle, of course, a temporary administration could be introduced in Ukraine under the auspices of the UN, the United States, European countries and our partners.”
Putin emphasized the need for the new government to be credible and trusted by the populace, which would facilitate peace negotiations. He expressed a commitment to resolving the conflict through peaceful means, while stressing the importance of addressing the root causes that led to the ongoing crisis.
Furthermore, Putin called for a broader involvement in peace discussions, highlighting the potential roles of the People’s Republic of China, India, Brazil, South Africa, and other BRICS nations, as well as North Korea, which has already deployed additional troops to support Russian forces in Ukraine.
He mentioned that Russia is also open to collaboration with European nations, albeit with skepticism regarding their consistency. Putin remarked, “But it’s OK, we have gotten used to it already,” urging caution in trusting external partners. He acknowledged former U.S. President Donald Trump for his efforts towards ending the conflict.
These remarks came amid separate peace negotiations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where Russian, Ukrainian, and U.S. officials discussed a potential ceasefire. Following these talks, both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of failing to uphold commitments regarding military strikes, indicating ongoing tension despite diplomatic efforts. The next round of discussions is scheduled to continue in mid-April, as reported in Russian media.
