The IMD warns that Northwest India will likely face 10-12 heatwave days this summer, increasing from the typical 5-6 days. These conditions signify abnormal temperatures, though not all days will exceed normal highs. Government measures are being considered to address heat impacts.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about a significant increase in heatwave days expected this summer in Northwest India. Typically, the region experiences around 5-6 heatwave days per season; however, this year, forecasts predict that number to rise to 10-12 heatwave days. This is effectively double the usual occurrence.

IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy noted that slightly above normal heatwave conditions are anticipated, particularly impacting West and Central India. Although there will be an increase in heatwave days, it does not imply that all days will reach above normal temperature thresholds.

In 2024, India recorded a staggering 554 heatwave days, marking the hottest year on record for the country. A heatwave is defined as any condition where maximum temperatures in the plains reach at least 40 degrees Celsius or exceed the seasonal average by five degrees.

The IMD’s seasonal heat outlook for March-May 2025 indicates that while various regions of India are expected to see above-normal temperatures, southern and northeastern states may remain close to or below normal.

The IMD forecast confirmed that abnormal minimum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country, with exceptions noted in some isolated southern regions where normal temperatures are anticipated.

Additionally, measures are being discussed at the government level to combat the potentially severe heat conditions, including adjustments to school timings as part of safety measures during the summer months.

The IMD has indicated a substantial rise in heatwave days for Northwest India this summer, with predictions of 10-12 days compared to the usual 5-6. While most areas are expected to experience above-normal temperatures, some regions may still see typical conditions. The government is exploring actionable steps to mitigate the impact of the heatwave.
