Approximately six homes were destroyed in Okayama due to a fire that began on Mount Kaigara, affecting 250 hectares (600 acres). Additionally, one firefighter sustained minor injuries while responding to the fire in Imabari, located in Ehime prefecture.
Firefighters utilized water sprays from defense helicopters, yet as of Monday afternoon, the flames remained uncontrolled. Experts attributed the wildfires to dry weather conditions and the accumulation of dried leaves in the forest, worsening the fire risk in Okayama and Imabari.
A separate, smaller fire was reported in Aso, Kumamoto prefecture, early Sunday but was effectively quelled by Monday morning. This fire resulted in one minor injury, and local reports indicate it originated from residents burning trash.
These incidents follow severe wildfires in Ofunato, Northern Japan, which caused one fatality and harmed over 200 buildings, with the fire consuming 2,900 hectares (7,170 acres) of land, almost one-tenth of the city’s area.
The wildfires in western Japan have led to significant damage, evacuations, and injuries in multiple towns.
