Negotiations for a ceasefire in Ukraine are ongoing in Saudi Arabia, marking the third day of discussions aimed at a partial war pause. Both sides remain engaged in military operations, using drones and missiles, complicating efforts to finalize even a short, 30-day ceasefire initially agreed upon last week.
Divergences in the interpretation of a potential ceasefire have arisen. The U.S. suggests that a partial ceasefire should halt attacks on “energy and infrastructure,” while Russia limits it to “energy infrastructure.” Nonetheless, some common ground has emerged regarding safe commercial shipping in the Black Sea, although specific agreements are pending.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov shared that discussions in Riyadh primarily focused on ensuring safe shipping routes in the Black Sea. This area is critical as both Russia and Ukraine have key ports along it. Lavrov indicated that Russia might resume a 2022 agreement allowing Ukrainian grain shipments to certain regions grappling with food insecurity.
Advisor Serhii Leshchenko emphasized that U.S.-Ukrainian negotiations also covered the security of Ukrainian ports such as Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kherson.
