Tokyo’s cherry blossoms started blooming on March 24, 2024, five days earlier than last year. Full bloom is expected soon. Kochi and Kumamoto prefectures also reported blooms on March 23, albeit a day later than usual, influenced by warm weather conditions.

Cherry blossoms in Tokyo began blooming on March 24, 2024, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency. This date is notably five days earlier than the bloom date in 2024. The agency anticipates that the cherry trees will reach full bloom within approximately one week.

An official from the weather agency confirmed the sighting of six flowers on a monitored Somei-Yoshino cherry tree at Yasukuni Shrine, surpassing the five-flower benchmark required for an announcement.

The cherry blossoms also commenced blooming on March 23 in Kochi and Kumamoto prefectures, marking them as the first areas in Japan to experience bloom in 2025. However, this year’s bloom is occurring one day later than the typical schedule.

In Kochi, a monitored Somei-Yoshino cherry tree at Kochi Castle displayed over 15 blooming flowers on the afternoon of March 23. The day was characterized by sunny weather across a large portion of Japan, with some regions recording maximum temperatures exceeding 25 degrees Celsius.

The cherry blossom season in Tokyo is commencing earlier than the previous year, with full bloom expected within a week. Kochi and Kumamoto have also reported early blooms, although slightly later than average. This marks an important observation for meteorologists tracking the timing of cherry blossoms in Japan.
