Saudi Arabia’s Role in Facilitating US-Ukraine Peace Talks
Saudi Arabia continues to facilitate US-Ukraine talks, seen as key to resolving the ongoing conflict. Ukrainian officials have reported productive discussions focusing on peace negotiations and energy. The Kingdom’s mediation role bolsters its influence while seeking solutions amid ongoing military actions and drone warfare between Ukraine and Russia.
Saudi Arabia has hosted a new round of productive talks between the US and Ukraine, according to Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. He mentioned that key points, including energy, were discussed, aiming for a “just and lasting peace.” Riyadh first facilitated these talks following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the White House in February, stepping in to stabilize US-Ukraine relations.
The first round of talks occurred in Jeddah after US-Russia discussions in Riyadh earlier and expressed Saudi Arabia’s hope for a lasting resolution to the Ukrainian crisis. Participants included key Ukrainian figures like Zelensky’s Chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, along with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Defense Minister Umerov.
The latest discussions happened on March 23, prior to US-Russian negotiations. US special envoy Steve Witkoff emphasized optimism regarding peace prospects, particularly around a potential Black Sea ceasefire. Witkoff stated, “I feel that (Russian President Vladimir Putin) wants peace,” suggesting significant progress might occur.
A Russian delegation is expected in Saudi Arabia on March 24, as Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the challenges ahead, asserting, “We are only at the beginning of this path.” While Moscow currently appears resistant to a ceasefire and is focused on a Black Sea grain deal, opportunities for cooperation remain.
Amidst ongoing hostilities, both Ukraine and Russia are increasingly relying on drone warfare. Reports indicated a recent surge in drone activity, with Russia launching 147 drones at Ukraine in a day and intercepting 60 Ukrainian drones. President Zelensky criticized the pace of talks, urging for a decisive resolution to end the strikes.
Saudi Arabia’s emerging role as a mediator marks a significant shift, enhancing its influence over the Trump administration and possibly increasing its involvement in Middle Eastern affairs, including outreach to Syria for reconstruction support and engagement in Gaza plans.
In summary, Saudi Arabia’s involvement in US-Ukraine negotiations reflects its growing influence as a mediator in international conflicts. The recent talks showcased a focus on establishing a peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding Russia’s stance and ongoing military conflicts, which intensify reliance on drone warfare. The Kingdom’s proactive role could reshape its regional engagement and partnerships moving forward.
