Russia executed a significant drone attack on Ukraine, specifically targeting Kyiv and other major cities, resulting in the death of at least seven individuals. This assault occurred just before scheduled indirect peace negotiations involving Ukrainian and Russian delegations, mediated by the U.S. in Saudi Arabia. The Ukrainian air force reported that 147 drones were deployed, with 97 successfully intercepted and 25 failing to reach their intended targets.
The drone attack caused three fatalities in Kyiv, including a five-year-old child, and left at least 10 others injured. Residents of Kyiv assessed the impact of the drone strikes on their communities, expressing skepticism regarding the upcoming ceasefire talks and suggesting that the destroyed homes reflect Russia’s true intentions.
A resident, Dmytro Zapadnya, highlighted a lack of trust in Russia’s commitment to any ceasefire agreement, stating, “There is no point in signing anything (with Russians), because it will not be worth the cost of paper where you put this signature.” He also questioned the U.S.’s grasp of the situation in Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed such attacks are a frequent reality for Ukrainians, stating that in the past week alone, more than 1,580 guided aerial bombs and nearly 1,100 strike drones were utilized against civilians. He called for innovative strategies to exert new pressure on Moscow to cease its attacks and the ongoing conflict.
Ukrainian officials are scheduled to meet with U.S. representatives on Monday, just before the peace negotiations in Saudi Arabia begin, amid escalating tensions following the drone assault.
