Mehul Choksi is living in Antwerp, Belgium, with his wife after obtaining residency amid allegations of document forgery. Indian authorities seek his extradition for a Rs 13,500 crore bank fraud. Choksi’s potential move to Switzerland for medical treatment has also been reported.
Fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi is currently residing in Antwerp, Belgium, with his wife Preeti Choksi after acquiring a residency card in Belgium, as reported on March 23, 2025. Indian authorities have sought the assistance of Belgian officials for Choksi’s extradition back to India, according to a media outlet focused on the Caribbean region. However, there has been no official confirmation of these developments from Indian authorities.
Choksi is charged in India regarding a significant bank loan fraud case amounting to Rs 13,500 crore and was previously believed to be living in Antigua and Barbuda before moving to Belgium. Notably, his wife Preeti is a Belgian citizen.
Reports suggest that Choksi may have used misleading and fabricated documentation to secure his residency in Belgium, allegedly aiming to avoid extradition to India. It has been asserted that he submitted false declarations and forgery in his application, failing to reveal his existing citizenship status in India and Antigua.
Additionally, Choksi is reportedly considering relocating to Switzerland for medical treatment at a prominent cancer hospital. Alongside Choksi, his nephew Nirav Modi is also implicated in the fraud case, having allegedly embezzled Rs 13,500 crore from the state-run Punjab National Bank using fraudulent letters of undertaking. Currently, Modi remains incarcerated in a London jail, challenging his extradition following multiple bail refusals.
In May 2021, Choksi mysteriously disappeared from Antigua but was later located and returned to the island.
In summary, Mehul Choksi is currently residing in Antwerp, Belgium, having obtained residency under questionable circumstances. He faces serious legal troubles in India for a massive bank loan fraud and has been pursued for extradition. Allegations of document forgery accompany his residency claim, and he may be planning a move to Switzerland for medical reasons. Meanwhile, his nephew is also embroiled in similar legal battles abroad.
