An NIT Silchar professor was suspended for alleged sexual harassment of a student. The victim detailed inappropriate interactions during a meeting. Students protested, and the chamber involved has been sealed. Police are monitoring the case as support for the victim is assured.
An Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Silchar, Assam, Dr. Koteswara Raju Dhenukonda, was suspended for allegedly sexually harassing a female student. The suspension, effective immediately, followed a formal complaint from a Bachelor of Technology student and stemmed from an overnight protest organized by students demanding action against the professor.
According to the victim’s written complaint, the harassment incident occurred when she was summoned to the professor’s chamber under the pretense of discussing her low grades. She described inappropriate physical interactions, including being touched on her hands, thighs, and stomach, while the professor played vulgar songs on his computer.
The student recounted her fear and discomfort, indicating she cried during the encounter and attempted to resist. She claimed the professor encouraged her to feel comfortable, making the situation worse until she received a phone call from a friend outside, enabling her to escape the situation. The victim categorized the events as molestation and psychological harassment.
In response, the registrar confirmed that the professor’s chamber had been sealed off and that the institution is providing necessary support to ensure the student’s safety. However, police have noted the situation but are awaiting an official complaint from either the student or NIT. The professor has not made any comments regarding the allegations.
The suspension of Dr. Koteswara Raju Dhenukonda reflects an institutional response to serious allegations of sexual harassment at NIT Silchar. The actions taken by the student, alongside supportive protests from fellow students, signify a movement towards addressing sexual misconduct in academic environments. The ongoing investigation and support for the victim are vital steps in making the institution safer for all students.
